Fostering Inclusion in Dedicated Spaces

We’ve been reflecting a lot on the importance of place and space—how critical it is to foster inclusion in all environments while also ensuring that neurodiverse children have dedicated spaces where they feel safe, supported, and able to be themselves. True inclusion means creating opportunities for participation in the broader community, but it also means recognizing that many public spaces weren’t designed with neurodiverse individuals in mind. Sensory overload, social demands, and unspoken expectations can make it exhausting to engage, leaving kids to do the heavy lifting of adapting rather than being met with understanding and accommodation. Safe spaces aren’t about isolation—they’re about creating environments where children can regulate, connect, and grow in ways that honor their needs. These spaces provide a foundation where they can build confidence, develop skills for community engagement, and experience the joy of being in a space designed with them at the center.

As we look ahead, we continue to ask ourselves: What spaces does PCDA need to best serve our clients and families? What might our services look like in the future? Every day, we grapple with the challenge of supporting children in developing the skills to navigate and succeed in a community that isn’t always as inclusive as we’d hope. While we advocate for greater accessibility and understanding, we also recognize the profound impact of dedicated spaces—places where children can practice, build confidence, and grow into the connections that will help them thrive. These are the questions that will guide us as we plan, dream, and shape the next chapter of PCDA.

Thanks to the generosity of the Helpful Honda team, our Green St. office has a refreshed and welcoming new lobby. The Helpful Honda folks not only purchased much-needed furniture for the space but also took the time to assemble nearly every piece themselves. Their hands-on support made a world of difference, and we were grateful to be a small part of the process. One of our young PCDA clients even got involved, carefully helping put a chair covering on—a moment that truly captured the spirit of collaboration and community.

The makeover has transformed our lobby into a more inviting space for the children, families, and staff who walk through our doors each day. The thoughtful arrangement of new seating has made the space more functional, and we are especially excited about the addition of a reading and conversation corner in our main room. This cozy area provides families with a quiet place to sit, connect, and engage with their children, reinforcing PCDA’s mission of fostering meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging.

This project is a great example of what can be achieved when organizations come together to support a shared purpose. The Helpful Honda team’s generosity extended far beyond just furniture; their time, effort, and commitment to creating a comfortable space for our families have left a lasting impact. Their support ensures that the families we serve feel welcomed and valued from the moment they step inside.

We are so grateful to Helpful Honda for their kindness and hard work. This refreshed space is more than just a new look—it represents the power of community and the importance of creating environments where children and families feel safe, supported, and at home.

At PCDA, the health and well-being of the children and families we serve are always our top priorities. Recently, the Eaton Fire in the San Gabriel Mountains served as a stark reminder of how quickly air quality can deteriorate due to wildfires. Smoke and ash from the fire spread across the region, posing serious health risks—especially for medically vulnerable children.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Pasadena Host Lions Club, we were able to take swift action and purchase air purifiers and filters for our offices. This critical addition ensures that our indoor spaces remain safe and healthy, allowing us to continue providing uninterrupted services to the 500+ families who rely on us. Clean air isn’t just a comfort—it’s a necessity, particularly for children with respiratory sensitivities or developmental disabilities who may struggle to communicate discomfort or regulate their environment.

The Pasadena Host Lions Club has been serving the local community since 1920, focusing on initiatives that promote health, vision care, and youth support. Their commitment to service, guided by their motto “We Serve,” has made a lasting impact on countless Pasadena residents. This grant is just one example of their dedication to fostering a healthier, stronger community.

With their support, our families can breathe a little easier—both literally and figuratively—knowing that PCDA remains a safe and welcoming place, no matter the challenges. We are incredibly grateful to the Pasadena Host Lions Club for helping us protect the well-being of the children and families we serve. Together, we’re creating a healthier future for all!
